From birth, we are taught the moral norms that the world has created. Foucault described this as 'subtle power' or 'micro-power'. Otherwise, we have no choice but to live according to the values and moral norms that the world tells us to live by. We end up building a shield around ourselves, telling ourselves that we are living as well as anyone—with a good school and a good job. And that chauvinism isolates me further.
