A Cypherpunk's Manifesto
- Privacy is essential for an Open Society Theory in the electronic age. Privacy is not the same as secrecy. Privacy is not wanting the whole world to know something; secrecy is keeping anyone from knowing it. Privacy is the power to selectively reveal oneself to the world.
- To protect privacy, the parties to a transaction should know only the information directly necessary to that transaction. If I buy a magazine at a store and hand cash to the clerk, I do not need to tell them who I am. If I have to tell them, then privacy is not protected.
- Protecting privacy in an open society requires anonymous transaction systems. Until now, cash has played that role. An anonymous transaction system is not a secret transaction system. In an anonymous transaction system, individuals can reveal as much information about themselves as they wish.
- Protecting privacy in an open society requires cryptography. What I say should be revealed only to those I choose to reveal it to. If anything I say can become known to anyone in the world, privacy is not protected.
- We cannot expect governments, corporations, or other large organizations to protect our privacy. If we want privacy protection, we must protect it ourselves. We must join forces to build systems in which anonymous transactions can take place.
- Cypherpunks strive to build anonymous systems. We protect our privacy with cryptography, anonymous mailing list systems, digital signatures, and electronic money.
- Cypherpunks write code. We must develop software to protect privacy, and since privacy cannot be protected unless we all do it, we will develop it ourselves. The code we write will be distributed free worldwide so that fellow cypherpunk developers can use it. This software will never be destroyed, and a widely dispersed system will never be shut down.
- Cypherpunks oppose the regulation of cryptography. Laws that regulate cryptography cannot cross national borders. Cryptography will spread globally, and with it, anonymous transaction systems will spread throughout the world.
- Cypherpunks actively participate in building networks that safely protect privacy. Let us all advance together with vigor!
