Along with Citibank, it is a bank that borrowed a huge amount of bailout funds from the government during the 2008 The Subprime Mortgage Crisis.

It continued to exist as a commercial bank, but after acquiring Merrill Lynch, an investment bank that had fallen into crisis during the Great Recession, it expanded into investment banking and simultaneously changed its official name to Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
