Electric Car Tesla's First Day of Listing
Since its founding in 2003, Tesla has recorded losses of $260.7 million over the past seven years, and is expected to continue its deficit streak until the Model S is released in 2012. There is no guarantee that it will be a huge success afterward.
Nevertheless, the enthusiasm for Tesla appears to reflect both the illusion of the old IT bubble and Americans' desire to rebuild a fallen automotive empire with electric vehicles.
Scott Sweet of IPO Boutique noted that Tesla's stock price faces an uphill battle. He recalled that the stock of A123 Systems, a lithium-ion battery maker for hybrid vehicles that went public last September, soared on its first day of trading but has now fallen 27% below its IPO price of $13.50.
Scott Sweet pointed out that Tesla "has a lot of financial problems" and that "the euphoria will soon fade. It is a recession, and Tesla's vehicles have a very limited market."
