American Version of Bong-i Kim Seon-dal - Liquid Death

  • Very ordinary water from Virginia, USA
  • How did they start?
    • The founder went to a concert sponsored by Monster Energy and saw band members drinking Monster like water. He thought they'd be carried off to the hospital if they drank that much energy drink, but it turned out the Monster cans simply contained water.
    • They chose Liquid Death, the name least suited to bottled water, and pushed it with an intense beer-can vibe. However, the combination of water and death—a word choice that clashed with the overly intense image—made them fail to attract investment.
    • They spent $1,500 to make a 2-minute ad and posted it on YouTube as a fake ad. It got 3 million views and became a huge hit.
  • Is Liquid Death special?
    • It's very ordinary water from Virginia, USA
    • A drink more expensive than Red Bull or Monster on a per-100ml basis
    • Differentiated by using cans instead of conventional plastic PET bottles
  • But it hit big
    • Sales went from $2.8 million in 2019 to $330 million in 2024, and the company was valued at $1.4 billion
    • It became a huge hit as a non-alcoholic beverage option for people who don't drink but still want to fit in at drinking gatherings
