Jim Chanos
The name of his company, Kynikos, means "dog" in Greek. This word is also the Greek term for the Cynic school, a branch of Greek philosophy, and the root of the word "cynical," which today refers to a person who is skeptical or contemptuous of others.
Why did he choose such a name? The primary reason is that Chanos is a Greek-American. Although it is his grandfather's homeland, Chanos is known to have a special affection for Greece. The second reason is that his hedge fund has been, quite rarely, a dedicated short-selling hedge fund that has survived for a full 30 years since its founding in 1985. The market goes up and down, of course, but the suffering of a short seller, who must always find falling stocks to short, is beyond description. The name embodies Chanos's own investment philosophy: short-selling opportunities can only be found by looking at everything in the world cynically (that is, critically).
