The Inner Voice the Buddha Spoke
Stress comes when you do not focus on reality. What does that mean? Most of the stress people feel is an illusion. You cling to the past that has already gone and regret it, or you worry about a future that has not yet come and tremble in fear. It is like mistaking being chased by a robber in a dream for reality. What happens when you wake from that dream? You realize that it was just a dream and an illusion, and the pain disappears. This means that in the stress one actually suffers, there are almost no real stressors.
That said, this does not mean you should not reflect on the past or prepare for the future. Regretting the past that has already passed only brings suffering, and fearing an unpredictable future only brings pain. Excessive attachment to the past or future actually leads to a failure to focus on reality.
Do not be hit by the second arrow
For example, suppose something bad happens in reality. That event ends with the event itself. For most people, when something happens, they suffer even more from the anguish caused by that event than from the misfortune of the event itself. In Buddhism, that is called the second arrow.
