Gold Transport
The Dutch central bank secretly moved 200,000 kilograms of gold bars and coins over the past four weeks from the DNB vault in Haarlem to the new DNB cash center in Zeist.
Today is the final transport day for the gold reserves, worth 10.4 billion dollars. A strategic banknote inventory worth 4.5 billion dollars was also moved from Haarlem to Zeist. The Royal Military Constabulary provided security for the gold and cash transport.
For years, this gold and the banknotes were kept at the DNB headquarters in the center of Amsterdam. Due to the renovation of this building, the gold and cash were moved in October 2020 to the former money printing works of Joh. Enschedé in Haarlem. Even then, the plan was to eventually store them in Zeist, at the newly built cash center on the former Camp New Amsterdam defense site.
This center was built on time and within budget, which is why the move can now take place. The gold in Zeist accounts for 31% of the total gold held by DNB. Another 31% is stored in the vault of the Federal Reserve, the US central bank in New York. The remaining 38% is in London and Ottawa, the capital of Canada.
This gold and currency will not return to the DNB headquarters in Amsterdam, which is scheduled for renovation until the end of next year. This building in the middle of Amsterdam requires much less stringent security and will be open to the public.
