Catching Fake News
How to identify fake news
Consider the source
When you click on an article, check the site, the publication name, and contact information.
Read between the lines
Headlines can be absurd to increase click counts. What about the full story?
Check the author
Do a quick search on the author. Are they trustworthy? Are they real?
Is there supporting evidence?
Click the links. Check whether the information provided actually supports the story.
Check the date
Republishing an old news article does not mean it is relevant to current issues.
Is it a joke?
If it is too far-fetched, it may be satire. Investigate the site and author to confirm.
Check your biases
Consider whether your beliefs might affect your judgment.
Ask an expert
Ask a librarian or consult fact-checking sites.
