Kuleshov effect

montage was a theory stating that a shot does not exist on its own, but creates new meaning or emotion through its relationship with the preceding and following shots. To prove this, Lev Kuleshov conducted the following experiment.
- Shoot an actor's expressionless face.
- Film other subjects.
- Edit and attach each subject to the actor's face in sequence.
- Show the differently edited faces with different subjects to different audiences.
- Ask the audiences to explain what emotion the actor was portraying.
The subjects used in the experiment were a warm soup, a child in a coffin, and a woman on a sofa, and the audiences answered that they felt hunger, sadness, and love, respectively. Through these answers, Lev Kuleshov confirmed that editing could control even the actor's performance, and thereby established the basic concept of montage. This experiment later became known as the Kuleshov experiment, or the Ivan Mozzhukhin experiment after the actor.
