BlackRock
Founded in 1988 by eight people including Larry Fink and Robert Kapito, it started out as an equity fund manager. After entering the MBS (mortgage-backed securities) market in 1992, it made its mark in MBS management and quickly moved into the industry's upper tier; following the Dot-com Bubble in 1999, it rose to the position of the world's largest Asset Management Company.
BlackRock alumni have taken key operational leadership positions at the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the National Economic Council, and the firm is now recognized as the world's number one global financial company—not just in asset scale but also in political influence.
CEO Larry Fink, who had long expressed a skeptical stance on virtual assets, has recently been shifting to a friendlier position. In his annual letter to shareholders last March, he said, "As client interest has grown, we have already been researching digital currencies and related technologies," and noted that "a carefully designed digital payment system can reduce the risk of money laundering or corruption while strengthening international transaction settlement."
