Tim Draper

His grandfather, William Draper, founded what was no less than Silicon Valley's first venture capital (VC) firm, and his father, William Draper III, also founded a venture capital firm. Draper himself also founded DFJ Capital in 1985, named after its three founders.

In February 2014, Mt. Gox, then one of the world's top exchanges, was hacked and approximately 850,000 bitcoins were stolen. All of Tim Draper's bitcoins also disappeared as a result of the Mt. Gox hack. Confident in his own judgment of Bitcoin's value, when the CIA put up for auction the 30,000 bitcoins it had seized up to that point, he won the entire lot at $632 per coin—higher than the prevailing market price. Even after losing all the bitcoins he had bought at $6 to the hack, he bought Bitcoin again three years later at $632, which looked like a fool's move to others. However, in November 2017 Bitcoin reached $10,000, and Tim Draper earned substantial profits from his Bitcoin investment. But he does not view Bitcoin merely as an investment; he is so optimistic about the future of cryptocurrency that if he had to invest his entire fortune in only one of stocks, gold, dollars, or Bitcoin, he says he would choose 100% Bitcoin.

Tim Draper's recent investments include Robinhood, Coinbase, eShares, and OpenGov. Draper's recent investments have centered on companies that apply artificial intelligence, Bitcoin, blockchain, smart contracts, and computational genomics to industries such as finance, healthcare, and government.
