Whaling and Whale Oil

Particularly during the Industrial Revolution period, whaling was active, mercilessly catching whales across the seas, as technologies for ocean navigation and pelagic whaling advanced and demand for lubricants surged.

Gas lamps could only be used in large cities because fuel was supplied through pipelines, and as gas burned, it produced dirty smells and strange noises. There was also the possibility of explosion. What made up for these shortcomings was whale oil.

When demand for whale oil reached its peak, it is said that whales were caught in the open ocean, oil was extracted, and the meat was thrown into the sea.
