Nationalism

Nationalism refers to the totality of ideas and actions that value the nation, a community based on collective homogeneity, belonging, and solidarity. It can also refer to the idea that a nation-state based on the nation should be founded and that the nation should exercise its own sovereignty. Patriotism is a concept that belongs to nationalism.

The Rise of Nationalism

In the past, only the warrior class fought battles. Peasants could not fight even if immediately trained. It took ten years to produce one skilled archer. However, the development of weapons changed this. Now even children and women, if handed a gun, could easily overpower adult men. In other words, thanks to the advancement of weapons, anyone could become a soldier with just basic training.

After the Napoleonic Wars, nationalist education was strengthened so that anyone could voluntarily become a soldier and fight, and the concept of war shifted from battles between warrior classes to Total War—a struggle staking the fate of nation against nation. Now, a foundation for citizens to ideologically accept such mobilization through nationalism and similar ideas became important.
