Amygdala Hijack
Have you ever felt powerless because of emotions so intense that you lost control? Have you ever blurted out words in a fit of passion and regretted them later? Do you remember experiencing something that felt like an emotion other than yourself taking over your brain? If you answered ‘yes’ to even one of the above questions, then you have experienced an amygdala hijack.
Amygdala hijack is a technical term coined by Daniel Goleman to describe such uncontrollable emotions. Goleman, an expert in emotional intelligence, says that humans act irrationally because they fail to control their emotions in the moment. In other words, it is a phenomenon that occurs when the amygdala takes over the brain.
“Intense negative emotions steal our attention, making it impossible to do anything else.”
- Daniel Goleman
